Unveiling new toilets and a revitalised Clapham Junction Station for passengers

After nearly a year of extensive refurbishment and renewal works at Clapham Junction Station, we are thrilled to have recently opened our newly expanded and accessible toilets and with new changing facilities, located at Clapham Junction Station’s Brighton Yard Entrance. Despite facing various challenges, including unforeseen structural issues, a constrained worksite and complex  logistical co-ordination of  various parts over the programme, our dedicated team worked tirelessly around the clock, even during the Christmas season. Our team’s hard work ensured this key milestone was completed to programme for our customer, Network Rail, and allowed passengers to enjoy the new facilities as soon as possible.

Clapham Junction is the busiest interchange station in the UK and is responsible for 2% of all passenger journeys nationally. Our One Team Wessex colleagues have been working on Network Rail’s multi million-pound improvement scheme to enhance the station, improve passenger experience and relieve congestion since March 2022. The triple phase programme included re-modelling The Brighton Yard Entrance, at bridge level off St John’s Hill; the wider gate lines were opened at the end of 2023 improving accessibility and reducing overall congestion. The team completed a successful weekend blockade in Easter 2023, replacing and widening the staircases on platform 13 and 14,  improving safety and allowing for a higher volume of people to pass through. Other improvements we have made include a modern passenger waiting area and we will soon begin works on a new retail unit prior to completion later this year.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone involved, including our supply chain partners for safely and efficiently delivering the works for our customer. The upgrades are already making a huge impact to the travelling public.
