Looking after passengers during accessibility works

Temporary passenger footbridge installed at Motspur Park Station

Our One Team Wessex colleagues working at Motspur Park Station are making great strides to enhance accessibility at the station and to minimise disruption to passengers have recently installed a temporary footbridge.  This addition will allow passengers to continue to access the island platform station easier and safer whilst we complete these vital improvement works.

When construction works began in July 2023 one entrance was closed to passengers to allow construction works to take place. The original diversion meant that passengers had to cross over Motspur Park Level crossing. However, recognising that this closure increased passengers travel time to the platform and that there was an increase of trespassing incidents, the team collaborated with our customer, Network Rail to install the footbridge. It will now remain in place throughout the duration of the programme.

The team are making great progress on the project having completed pouring all pile caps, delivered a 27 hour possession safely and on time to complete foundation and drainage works and have utilised several opportunities during industrial strike action to progress with works which would usually need to be carried overnight.

What is the Access for All Scheme?

The Access for All Scheme (AFA) is a government initiative to provide step free access and unobstructed routes within stations to help passengers with reduced mobility or those with young children in prams, to travel easier around the infrastructure.

The scope of this project includes installing a covered footbridge; replacing the existing structure, and three new larger lifts which  will  provide  passengers full access to the lifts, stairs and to the central platforms; making it easier for customers to navigate their way around the station. New lighting and security cameras will also be installed on and around the lifts and bridge to help increase visibility and improve security in the station.

A huge well done to everyone involved for your excellent collaboration with our customer to help keep all passengers safe whilst we carry out these important works and  for implementing efficiencies to ensure we complete works to programme for Network Rail.
