Bournemouth community come together to officially open the new Glenferness Avenue footbridge

Congratulations to our Regional Civil Engineering team for completing phase 1 of improvement works in Glenferness Avenue, Bournemouth, which was marked by an official grand opening ceremony. This was hosted by BCP Council which saw local schools and the wider community come together to test out the new bridges and explore the enhanced area.

The team began working on the project in July 2023 to install two new bridges over the railway for walkers and cyclists, cycle approach lanes from the road to the bridges and the area boasts a new toucan crossing and several junction improvements. Ramps and stepped cycle lanes have been added between Elgin Road and Alyth Road, with a new toucan crossing now in place just north of East Avenue. Improvements have also been made to the East Avenue/Glenferness Avenue Road junction.

Phase 2 of the works is underway and nearing completion. The team have been installing parallel crossings, new lighting, improving road markings and drainage and resurfacing the area.

This new infrastructure is part is all part of BCP Council’s programme to promote active travel and to improve a sustainable travel route between Bournemouth town centre and Talbot Woods, Winton and Wallisdown.

Check out BCP Council’s great video sharing how the new footbridge has significantly improved the area.

Huge thanks to everyone involved and our trusted supply chain partners who made it all possible. All your hard work has allowed the local public to enjoy a modern and safer walking and cycling across the railway line.
